With Basic Setups we lower and reshape the nut and bridge to get the strings low enough to play at all. Factory direct basses are mostly unplayable with how high the nut and bridge are, so someone HAS to handle at least the nut and bridge.
For orchestral play we will reshape the bridge as we lower it so that it's easier to bow without hitting two strings at once. And we'll thin the bridge out so the bass sounds better and louder. ALL new upright bass fingerboards need reshaping handling for a real smooth playing lower action. If you want the bass to be definitely as smooth and easy playing as possible it needs the fingerboard work.
You can order "FINGERBOARD RE-SHAPING FOR easiest playing ACTION(+$195)" to include the fingerboard work if you want to ensure you get a superbly smooth playing orchestral bass.
